คำว่า "ไท ไทย ไต หรือไตย" เป็นภาษาตระกูลไท ที่ชนเผ่าตระกูลไท หรือไตใช้เรียกขานแทนชื่อเผ่าพันธุ์ของตน ถึงแม้ว่าจะใช้อักษรต่างกันเป็น "ท หรือต" แต่ในเชิงความหมายแล้วหมายถึง "ชนเผ่าที่รักอิสระ" เหมือนกัน              ไทยใหญ่ เป็นคำภาษาไทยกลางเรียกคนไทยอีกกลุ่มหนึ่ง ซึ่งมีถิ่นฐานที่อาศัยที่กระจัดกระจายอยู่ในยูนนานบ้าง ในพม่าบ้าง ทางภาคเหนือของไทยบ้าง แต่ส่วนใหญ่อยู่ในรัฐฉาน ....
