Tore's daughter, of Vange town, She sleeps too long in her bed of down She oversleeps the morning mass, May God have mercy on this churchgoing lass!
Lady Mareta climbs up to the loft -The forest was wet and cold- Her daughter Karin she wakens so soft -And the buds on the trees unfold-
"Rise up my daughter, be not slow; Thou shalt to church in Kaga go."
Noble Karin sat on her bed, Binding her locks with a ribbon red.
Noble Karin donned her silken shift, The work of fifteen maiden's fingers swift.
Noble Karin slipped over her head The lovely skirts with the golden thread.
Noble Karin donned her cloak of blue, Now to leave for church she was due.
In the midst of the forest gloom Three herdsmen in her path did loom.
"Either thou serve as our herdsmens' wife Or thou shalt lose thy young life."
"Do not try thy force on me, Or my father will deal with thee."
"Neither thy father nor thy kin do we fear, After we slay thee we shall not be here."
First she became the herdsmen's wife Then she lost her budding young life.
They led her by her golden hair Into a grove of birches fair.
By her golden hair so free They pinned her against a fallen tree.
From her body they cut her golden head, A spring welled forth where the girl lay dead.
They stripped her body of clothes and gold, Filled their bags with all they could hold.
In a shallow grave they lay her down And took her clothes to the nearby town.
By chance they followed the same way That Noble Karin had taken that day.
They walked so long and the path was the same That to Vange the herdsmen came.
They came to the house on Sir Tore's lands. Waiting at the door Sir Tore stands.
"You look so warm in your coat of fur, We herdsmen are cold, can you shelter us, sir?"
Into his house of stone he did lead The herdsmen, and offered wine and mead.
Sir Tore for his daughter yearned Why has his Karin not returned?
Before Lady Mareta went up to bed She turned to look when a herdsman said:
"Do you want to buy a silken shift, Surely the work of nine maidens swift?"
When the garment he did show The mother's heart filled with woe.
Lady Mareta went to her husband's room To bring him tidings of Karin's doom.
"Wake up my lord, I tell of slaughter The herdsmen have slain thy beautiful daughter.
"Her bloodied shift the herdsmen possess Anguish upon my heart does press."
Into the hall ran the noble lord, Under his cloak a naked sword.
He killed the first, and the second too, And then the third he also slew.
Then Sir Tore threw down his sword "Have mercy on my deed, dear Lord."
"How shall I atone for the deed so gory? I shall build a church of stone to Thy glory."
"That, we shall willingly do," -The forest was wet and cold- "Let the Karna church be my penance true." -And the buds on the trees unfold-
