A retired person like me had very extravagant times. It's the situation in my daily life now.

However, I have friends in the social media instead. Certainly, I feel happy among all of you.

Many thanks to my assistants in this article, Google Translate and G Grammarly.

The Human Side of Pack Animals

The Human Side of Pack Animals

Now, the VOA Learning English program Words and Their Stories.

Like many languages, English uses animals in many of its expressions. And there are thousands of kinds of animals. So, when we talk about them, we put them into different groups.

Take, for example, pack animals.

One kind is an animal used to carry packs, or heavy loads. Donkeys and mules are pack animals. We sometimes call these animals beasts of burden because they help to ease the burden of humans.

I’ll never be your beast of burden

My back is broad but it's a'hurting

All I want is for you to make love to me ...

Another type of pack animals are the ones that live and hunt in a group, or pack. These include grey wolves and dolphins, just to name a couple.

Running with a pack has many benefits. When animals live in a pack, they work together. There is strength (and safety) in numbers. If you run with a pack, you can depend on others in your group. And there is always someone who has your back, or is ready to fight for you.

We can describe people the same way.

Some like to run with a pack. They like to surround themselves with like-minded people. People can run with a pack that likes the same music, has the same politics or enjoys the same activities.

It is easy to hang out with people who generally agree with you. It is comfortable -- maybe a little too comfortable.

This can lead to a pack mentality, a situation where everyone thinks the same. After time you could become resistant to ever disagreeing, fearful of losing your place in the pack.

We also call this groupthink. This is a situation where members of a group feel pressure to always agree. Groupthink results in failures to think critically about an issue, situation or decision.

Groupthink or pack mentality can even be dangerous.

People caught up in a pack mentality do not think for themselves and can make bad decisions. For example, teenagers might start hanging with other teens who do drugs or commit crimes. So, parents often try to control which pack their child runs with.

With both animals and people, there is usually a leader of the pack.

They told me he was bad, but I knew he was sad.

That’s why I fell for the leader of the pack.

In our human pack, the leader is the one who calls the shots. They make the decisions for the group.

Some people, however, have no desire to run with a pack. They might be ahead of the pack and are more forward thinking. They do not want to go along with what everyone else is doing. Maybe they are just faster! Or perhaps they simply enjoy the life of a lone wolf.

As a lone wolf you solve problems by yourself. You do not ask for help when making decisions. You are free from pleasing a group. However, you might not have many friends. After all, everything has a cost.

Now, we finish our show with yet another type of pack animal – the pack rat.

This is a small rodent of western North America. Pack rats have large cheek pouches, where they store food and other things. These pouches can fill up fast!

In the human world, pack rats are people who keep things that they do not need. They store them, not in their cheeks, but in their homes, garages and other storage places. A pack rat often says things like, “I can’t throw it out. I might it need it someday.”

When pack rats collect too much stuff and it interferes with their life -- they have become a hoarder. Hoarders have a difficult time throwing anything away. So, they usually find themselves surrounded by stuff, sometimes even buried under it!

However, sometimes it pays to be a pack rat or at least to know one. One day you just may need something they have collected – a 40-year-old newspaper, a bicycle wheel, or a cow bell. One look in a pack rat’s basement or garage and you just might find what you need!

And that’s Words and Their Stories. I'm Bryan Lynn. And I’m Anna Matteo.

“I have trouble letting go. Things cling to me, you know. I’ve got those better-save-it-cause-you-never-know-you-might-need-it-someday blues. You-better-save-it-cause-you-never-know-you-might-need-it-someday blues.”

Anna Matteo wrote this story for Learning English. Caty Weaver was the editor. The song in the middle of the show is The Shangri-Las singing “Leader of the Pack.” The song at the end is “Pack Rat Blues” written by Don Burger and sung by Susan Trump.

Kyrgyz heartthrob Lux - the Asian Cup's reluctant sex symbol

ASEAN+ January 20, 2019 01:00

By AFP

Abu Dhabi - Kyrgyzstan ace Vitalij Lux claims he would rather sit in his hotel room alone than be a sex symbol after his Asian Cup hat-trick sent female fans into a spin.

The 29-year-old hunk with the James Dean film-star looks and a name that sounds like a designer shampoo, plundered a midweek treble against the Philippines to fire the White Falcons into the last 16 on their tournament debut.

"This is new for me," hat-trick hero Lux told AFP in an interview on Saturday. "I can't believe it. I have a lot more Instagram followers suddenly."

Lux admits he is footloose and fancy-free, but the Kyrgyz heartthrob insists he's finding it hard to come to terms with his new-found fame.

"I'm still single, I'm searching for the right one," he blushed. "But I'm a very shy person. I prefer to sit in my room and just work hard at training."

Lux's Instagram followers jumped by some 6,000 overnight -- to just over 9,000 -- after his sharp-shooting swept Kyrgyzstan into the next round.

"I'm proud that I have so many followers," said the blond bomber, whose feed shows pictures of him training or lounging bare-chested by the pool.

"It's definitely an unusual situation for me but I feel proud the fans believe in me.

"I get goosebumps just thinking about the hat-trick," added Lux, who plays his club football in Germany with SSV Ulm.

"It was a fantastic feeling -- awesome, amazing. It's given me more self-belief. I feel stronger, bigger. I didn't expect it, it was just a perfect day."

- 'Girls love him' -

Lux still has some way to go to catch Cristiano Ronaldo's 152 million Instagram followers but a Kyrgyzstan official whispered conspiratorially: "girls love him back home."

The player himself hastily turned the conversation to Kyrgyzstan's clash with Asian Cups hosts the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi on Monday.

"It will be a tough game but they have the pressure, we don't," said Lux, who revealed that Kyrgyzstan president Sooronbai Jeenbekov had delivered a rousing pep talk over the phone before their last game.

"We can just play our football. We have nothing to lose."

For Kyrgyzstan -- hitherto better known for horseback wrestling, eagle hunting and dead goat polo -- simply reaching the Asian Cup was an astonishing achievement, given the parlous state of football in the former Soviet state.

But after finishing third behind South Korea and China in Group C to squeak through themselves, the Kyrgyz players are daring to dream.

"It's the biggest achievement in our football history," said Lux of Kyrgyzstan's run to the knockout stage, noting the country has won Olympic wrestling medals and long-distance track athlete Darya Maslova's gold at last year's Asian Games.

"The whole country is behind us -- the president called us true patriots," he added. "We are a close-knit team and in football everything is possible. It's a dream, but we can win it. Why not?"

US senator says Saudi crown prince must be 'dealt with' over Khashoggi murder

Breaking News January 20, 2019 01:00

By AFP

Ankara - A key US senator on Saturday said the Saudi crown prince was responsible for Jamal Khashoggi's murder and must be "dealt with", as he threatened new sanctions.

Republican Lindsey Graham, an influential ally of President Donald Trump, has previously said that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was complicit in the grisly killing of Washington Post contributor Khashoggi in October.

"I have concluded that the relationship between Saudi Arabia and the United States cannot move forward until MBS has been dealt with," Graham said, using the initials for the crown prince.
