"Those do not stand are not criminals.

Thinking differently is not a crime."

Dear friends,

The attempt of management in Thailand to bust the union is in almost every manufacturing.  The latest attempt is to the biggest and the oldest garment union 'Triumph Labour Unions, with over 3,000 members.  Please see detail in our website.

TLC is working closely with the union and will keep you inform shortly of what can we do to help the union. Today will be the second days of the union wildcat strike. The management is still very aggressive to the union and threaten to dismiss the whole union committee, not just the president, if the workers do not return to work.

Anyone have contact to Triumph management in Germany, please help the Triumph workers, by bring the news to the attention of the Triumph corporation about what is going on in Triumph Thailand.

Hope we can help the Triumph Workers Union in Thailand. The last biggest and strongest garment union left in Thailand.

In solidarity,

Thai Labour Campaign

Triumph Lingerie Workers Stop Work to Fight for Union President Reinstatement

July 30th, 2008
Posted in Workers News Thai Labour Campaign

30 July 2008

A hundred per cent members of Triumph International Labour Union in Samutprakarn province of Thailand are in front of the gate of Body Fashion (Thailand) Ltd. stopping their work to support the reinstatement of their president. Yesterday, the management of Body Fashion Company notified Ms.Jitra Cotshadet, the union president, that she is dismissed, taking effect on 30 July. The management claimed that Ms.Jitra defames the reputation of the company by wearing a black t-shirt reading 'Those do not stand are not criminals. Thinking differently is not a crime.'***  in a Thai TV program on 24th April 2008 that she was one of speakers to give information about problems of unwanted pregnancy among Thai workers and rights to abortion. The company said that it sued Ms. Jitra in the labour court to dismiss her by accusing her of defamation. Though, shortly after her present on TV, the company called her to meeting and she gave explanation already that she did not wear the t-shirt during working time, the TV program was late at night. And she did not say any word relating to the company. At that time, the management seemed to accept her explanation. But later the management sued to dismiss her in the labour court and claimed that the letter issued from the court ordering her to defend herself was delivered to her twice. But she has not received any of them until nowadays. It was only yesterday that she heard about this. Last month, the union has just concluded a deal on collective bargaining with the management. Triumph International Labour Union is one of the strongest union in Thailand since nearly hundred per cent of workers in a plant are union members. Majority of their members are women. Currently, the union committee members are negotiating with the management to reinstate the union president.

Triumph International (Thailand) Ltd was established in 1974 and started full operations in early 1975. A total staff of 1,500 is employed at the Head Office on New Petchburi Road, Bangkok. Body Fashion (Thailand) Ltd, the manufacturing arm of Triumph International (Thailand) Ltd, has its operations at Bangplee Industrial Estate in Samut Prakarn, employing more than 3,500 people. A satellite factory in Nakorn Sawan currently employs 500 workers.

Over 130 trade unionists, social activists, students and academics sign open letter condemning The Manager media group

Please sign this open letters by adding your name, affiliation, email address, website and comments below. FACT will make sure you are added to the signatories.

Over 130 trade unionists, social activists, students and academics have put their names to an open letter condemning the behaviour of The Manager media group.

Those signing the letter include many academics at Chulalongkorn and Thammasart Universities, including the Dean of the faculty of Political Science at Chulalongkorn University. Former Senator Jon Ungpakorn and Rawadee Prasertcharoensuk from the N.G.O. Coordinating Committee, Professor Niti Eawsriwong, Textile trade union leaders, worker activists and an academic from the Midnight University are among the signatures.

The letter is in response to the actions of Mr Sonthi Limtongkul’s Manager group in promoting violence against a young student activist Chotisak Oonsong, who is being accused of lèse majesté because he refused to stand up for the King’s Anthem at the cinema. Both Manager group websites and its radio station, Metro Life, have encouraged Ultra-Rightwing Royalists to attack Mr Chotisak. Ms Jitra Kotchadej, Chairwoman of the Triumph workers union has also been made a target for violence by The Manager media. Ms Jitra was singled out because she wore a T-shirt supporting the right to different views in society, including not standing up at the cinema. Both Mr Chotisak and Ms Jitra’s photographs and home addresses were published alongside urges to attack them. The Manager media also encouraged people to attack and break up a meeting on Human Rights at Thammasart University recently.

Those signing the open letter compare the behaviour of The Manager with the past behaviour of Rightwing media such as Dao Sayam newspaper and the Tank Corps radio station in inciting violence that led to the 6th October 1976 blood bath.

The letter calls on people to boycott The Manager media group for abusing basic human rights. The letter also calls on P.A.D. leaders Somsak Kosaisuk, Pipop Thongchai and Somkiat Pongpaiboon to come out and officially condemn The Manager.
